At Success in the City we like to say that we quack ourselves up!
Success in the City was founded in 2004. Cynthia de Lorenzi, former Chief Executive Officer of PatriotNet, Incorporated. A one-time networking event was hosted to say a tongue-in-cheek, laugh outloud, get your diva on, farewell to Sex and the City. Little could have anyone present that night have foreseen what was to come.
So how did all this fun and mayhem begin. After relocating to the Washington, D.C. region from Dallas, Texas, Cynthia discovered that she was missing the personal support system of other successful women that she had enjoyed in Texas. Her move to D.C. was precipitated by the unexpected death of her youngest sibling and adored only brother, Bob de Lorenzi. The challenges of taking over her brother's Internet Service Provider business and leading a company in a shifting regulatory climate made for a demanding and challenging life. Recognizing how much the woman-to-woman friendships in Texas had helped Cynthia work through those occassional life challenges brainstorming was underway to find a way to establish a similar circle of friends and peer support.
The very first event was planned as a one-time networking bash celebrating the value of friendship and networking among smart, professional women. The event's emphasis was on fun and humor; and business as a supplemental consideration. That very first event in April 2004 was such a success that the calls for more could not be ignored.
All who attended that first event expressed agreement with the premise that women who serve in leadership roles greatly appreciate an opportunity to connect with other women in a more personal and relaxed manner than is normally encountered at more formal business functions.
And thus, Success in the City was born!
Events are deliberately designed to allow peer relationships to develop spontaneously and naturally. Save your elevator pitch for the rest of your business life, it's not what Success in the City is about. This group is a haven for a unique and unpressured way to network.
If you know of other women who serve as leaders in business or their community, and willing to try a fun and different way to network, please let us know and we will be happy to see that they are added to our invitation list.
